HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Maharana Jagat Singh built the stunning temple between 1628-1653 at a huge cost of Rs 1.5 million. It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath and can be approached by a long flight of stairs. The place is located only 150 m north of the entrance to the City Palace. It enshrines a black stone image of Vishnu as Jagannath, Lord of the Universe. Jagdish Temple is best known for its Indo-Aryan architecture.
ARCHITECTURAL INTRICACIES
The temple is a tribute to the perverseness of its builders and marvel of the art. Two massive stone elephants flank the entrance to the temple. The temple has a pyramidal spire (shikar), a vestible (mandap) and a porch. The spire is about 79ft high and is decorated with friezes of dancers, musicians, elephants and horsemen. The temple is a three storeyed structure and has 50 pillars each in the first and second storeys and is one of the largest and popular Vishnu temples in Northern India.
The interior of the temple has exquisite carvings and attaches prominent friezes. The main Jagdish temple structure is situated in the middle with four smaller shrines in the four corners of the temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Sun God, Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva. An inscription in Sanskrit at the porch written by Krishna Bhatt (1651) gives a detailed history of the reign of Maharana Jagat Singh.
The three-storied temple structure is an architectural marvel with its perfectly carved pillars, carved ceilings, frescoed walls and plush halls. At the entrance of this pilgrimage center one can see the temple of Garuda. It is a figure of half-man and half-eagle and the idol is made up of bronze. This figure has a particular importance. This idol is said to be the largest and heaviest deity in India
To view this holy place of Udaipur you need to climb a series of thirty-two steps, which elevates the temple to a height of 24 kms. The foothold of the Jagdish temple steps has two spotless white elephants on both the sides to welcome you.
